I’m excited to share my cottagecore laundry room with you today!

This space has needed help for quite sometime. It is a very small space so I know I needed to put some thought into how it would be functional, yet beautiful.

Here is the absolutely dreadful before. Though I try to keep it picked up, it has become on the of those areas in our home that what I call a toddler proof dumping grounds.

If you have small children, then you know. You have to have a few places in your home where you can take things aways from a tantrum throwing, destruction seeking toddler and put it out of reach or behind a closed door. Our laundry room offers both, making it always full of random clutter.

How I Created a Cottagecore Laundry Room

Start by neutralizing the ugly

When giving this space a cottagecore makeover, the open shelf above the machines was the main problem. I’m not the most organized of people and I know that we will be in need of a toddler proof dumping ground for a while yet.

So instead of turning to some kind of organizing solution for all that junk, I just decluttered the space and covered it up! My easy DIY cottage style curtains fit the bill perfectly!

So that was the first step in this small space becoming a cozy cottagecore laundry room.

To ensure my curtains would reflect a cottagecore aesthetic, I choose a delicate floral calico of muted coral, blue, and beige tones. My curtains take up so much of the space that it was very key to pick just the right “cottagey” fabric as they will be a huge visual draw in my cottagecore laundry room.

Beautiful storage solutions

The next thing to tackle was how to hide all the bright colored laundry supplies with something vintage and much more visually appealing.

I’m always gathering vintage baskets and crates at estate sales, garage sales, and thrift shops. A few of these were purchased with the laundry room in mind, but others were just pulled from my inventory.

The large crate was perfect for storing the larger jugs of laundry soap and my stain removers. I store my vacuum cleaner, the charger, and it’s parts in the back section of the crate.

I originally thought I would mount these wood crates to the wall because they have hooks, but I acutally like them on the surface of the machines for now because they help keep things from falling into the black hole of a crack between the wall and my laundry machines. The wood crates house my mismatched sock collection that I need to sort through and my iron, steamer, and defuzzer.

This sweet little vintage wood caddy I found for five bucks at a garage sale. For now, it’s housing my wool dryer balls and mason jars filled with vintage clothes pins. I’m not sure how necessary this storage is, but I love having them displayed for their rustic beauty.

You may be wondering why I used so much of my surface area for organizing as opposed to leaving it clear for folding. Our home is quite small and filled with seven people so I really need that above shelf for food storage and few other things. I’m also happiest folding laundry in the sunshine of my bedroom with my large bed as surface to sort out all the folded clothing. A clear surface does sound nice though! Maybe someday.

Vintage inspired vertical storage

I have lived in small spaces for my entire marriage. I once lived in a 2 bedroom on campus apartment for 3 plus years with 4 children so I know of which I speak.

Use. Vertical. Storage.

My vintage inspired solution in this particular space are these peg rack shelves. I found two matching ones for $5 each at a barn sale, painted them gray, and viola!

They are perfectly cottagey in this space and the peg provide a few options for storage.

Hang things directly from the pegs such as my little whisk broom and apron.

Another fun option is to create even more storage by hanging baskets from the pegs.

For example, I hang this wire basket from a peg and we toss all of our dirty cloth napkins in there. Then when I’m ready to wash them I just grab the basket and dump it all in the washing machine.

How I Made My Cottagecore Laundry Room Thrifty

To keep things thrifty, it’s a long game. I’m always thrifting and collecting pieces that I like. I was able to thrift the fabric for my DIY curtains (find that tutorial here), some of the curtain rings, all of the wooden crates, the vintage art, and all of the baskets.

This beautiful rug was also a bargain! I found it on amazon it’s generally inexpensive because it’s a printed rug, as opposed to being woven. If this post finds you near the post date follow this link to the rug because it was also on sale. Some of the patterns at up to 75% off!

How To Create A Cozy Cottagecore Laundry Room

Texture and lighting are key to creating a cozy space in my mind.

This laundry room is a bit of a tiny cave in the back of my home. So I thought I would capitalize on that and make it as cozy as can be.

For the lighting I did a super simple upgrade. I had a builder’s grade boob light, but did you know that you can remove just the glass shade from the boob light and use the existing hardware to screw in a lamp shade? It’s so easy! See this video tutorial to see this super simple upgrade.

I had a few lampshades in my stash that I had acquired free or extremely cheap. After I hung it I decided it needed a little something more so I gave it a really simple makeover.

Using hot glue, burlap strips, and cording that I already had I covered this boring lamp shade and gave it a little something special for extra coziness.

To add texture I used baskets, the wood texture from the crates, and of course some faux foliage. There’s nothing like greenery and flowers to cozy up a space.

The final cozy touch that really completed the space for me was the rug. This beautiful vintage inspired print is so gorgeous. I chose the brick and blue color to play off of the coral and blue found in the curtains and I love them together!
