It will blow your mind how delicious my savory caramelized cabbage actually is! Who knew that cabbage had so much depth and flavor when given just the right amount of love and attention?!
My children love this dish because it has that irresistible sweet and savory combination. It feels elevated and elegant, yet it is the humble and very affordable cabbage.
Savory caramelized cabbage is also so easy to slice up and throw in a skillet at the beginning of your meal. It cooks up in about 30 minutes with minimal stirring involved. So just get it going and move along the rest of your meal!
Make Savory Caramelized Cabbage a Meal
One of our favorite ways to make this dish a meal is with sausage. My boys will eat anything with sausage! I typically used ground sausage, but kielbasa is delicious as well!
After you get your cabbage going in the skillet, add in a sliced onion and cook it right along with the cabbage. I typically cook the sausage in a separate pan and add it in once the cabbage is complete. Sometimes I add a splash or two of broth or water to the cabbage and onions which creates more liquid in the pan, giving the dish a bit of a sauce. Then I let that simmer and thicken a few minutes.
Serve this over brown rice and be sure to spoon some that sauce over the top!
Delicious and simple! Your family will praise you!

How to Make Savory Caramelized Cabbage
You want your pan good and hot, so start by preheating a heavy bottomed large skillet on medium to medium-low heat for about 5 minutes. If your pan starts to smoke, then turn it down a bit.
Start by adding 3 tablespoons of olive oil to the pan.
While that heats, core your cabbage and slice it as thinly and evenly as possible.
Next add the cabbage to the pan, sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of sea salt, and toss to incorporate.
Cover the pan and let it cook for about 10 minutes to wilt down the cabbage.
Then uncover and stir, scraping up any brown bits to incorporate and checking that the burner is not too hot and burning the cabbage.
Cover the pan and cook another 10 minutes.
Now uncover the pan again and add your aminos and Worcestershire sauce. These liquids will help to deglaze the pan, so as you stir be sure to scrape the bottom of the pan to incorporate any of those yummy brown bits.
Cover and cook yet another 10 minutes.
Uncover and add a tablespoon or two of water to deglaze the pan once more and stir to incorporate.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
This next step is optional but so yummy! Sprinkle on a tablespoon or two of coconut sugar, stir, and let it thicken in the juices and cook down for a few minutes.
Finally, complete the dish by stirring in the butter for a silky, velvety finish.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
